Congratulations to Gabrielle Handwerk (Current Program Coordinator/Incoming Co-President), Kristy Gustavson (Current Treasurer/Incoming Co-President), Sara Secada-Lovio (Current/Incoming Secretary) and Lauren Read (Current Active Member/Incoming Undergraduate Liaison) for being elected into your positions for next year!

The incoming executive board will be in touch sometime in the summer regarding next year, with possible meeting dates, meeting topics, and other relevant updates. Good luck with all of your final projects and examinations and have a great summer!

Mental Health Panel

MENTAL HEALTH PANEL: Dispelling Myths, Revealing Truths, Instilling Hope

CLA room 1201, Thursday April 30^th from 7 – 9pm

NAMI on Campus is one of the co-sponsors for this upcoming panel event, titled, “Mental Health Panel: Dispelling Myths, Revealing Truths, Instilling Hope”. This is wonderful opportunity to learn more about mental health from individuals who have experienced challenges related to mental health. Some of their topics will include: depression, anxiety, trauma, schizophrenia, substance use, and LGBT-related challenges. Four panelists have been confirmed for the event.

If you are interested in volunteering at the panel event, please email towsonunami@gmail.com with your interest and arrive at 6:15pm on the day of the event. Membership points will be awarded to volunteers (2) and attendees (1)!!! Promotional materials related to the event are attached to this email.

OUT OF THE DARKNESS WALK (Sunday, May 3rd)

The Out of the Darkness Walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is coming up on Sunday May 3 from 7 - 8:30pm. AFSP promotes advocacy, awareness, and education about suicide prevention. This walk is the perfect opportunity to participate it a mental illness related event without even having to leave campus. If you'd like to sign up and/or fundraise for the walk, please visit this link. If you are unable to fundraise and just want to come out day of and show your support, feel free to do so! We will have a NAMI team that you can join, so make sure to register under our team and look for emails about meeting up at the walk!

Our next member meeting will be on Wednesday, May 5th, at 2:00pm in the College of Liberal Arts building, room CLA 3216. This is our LAST meeting for the semester!!! You can earn an extra membership point and a discount off of your dues for next year if you bring a friend to the meeting!!

4/2 at 12pm: Ted Talk Event (RSVP!!!)
There will be a talk discussion event this Thursday, April 2 at 12:00 pm in the Loch Raven Rooms of the University Union. Free pizza will be provided. We will be watching the talk, "What's so funny about mental illness" by Ruby Wax, participating in a group discussion, and engaging in an advocacy and awareness-raising activity.

Upcoming Events

Bystander Intervention Workshop (Member Meeting) 3/26

At our next member meeting in CLA room 3216 on Wednesday 3/25 at 2pm, we will be having a Bystander Intervention workshop, facilitated by a speaker from the Counseling Center's Sexual Assault Peer Education team! As sexual assault is linked to Mental health & illness, this is a great way to learn about sexual assault on campus and what you can do to prevent and deal with issues related to sexual assault on campus.

DSM-LIVE EVENT 4/7

NAMI is partnering with the Counseling Center to host their upcoming event DSM-live! This will be an "around-the-world" interactive event with different disorders stationed in rooms around the Counseling Center. It will take place on Tuesday, April 7 at 6:30 pm.

The committee is in need of volunteers to help with giving tours, setting up/tearing down, tabling at the end of the tour, and manning different rooms. If you are interested in signing up for any of these tasks, please email Gabrielle Handwerk at ghandw1@students.towson.edu. Membership points will be given to volunteers.

Spring Ted Talk 4/2

On Thursday, April 2, 2015 from 12pm - 1:30 in Loch Raven (University Union), NAMI on Campus will be hosting a Spring Ted Talk Program related to mental illness! This will be a great opportunity to learn more about mental illness while engaging in meaningful discussion about the TED Talk afterwards. Food will be served at the event!
